ArtiJuli, Kråkeslottet, Senja, North Norway. Kråkeslottet (crows nest) stands on pillars in the Ocean at the end of a causeway on a small islet and pier once a fish plant built 1899 it is now a cultural arts venue. In february 2022 I undertook an artist’s residency at Kråkeslottet staying in a cabin on the pier. It felt like a liminal place to slip between worlds with the sun remaining low and the tide rising and falling beneath me the boundaries of land / sea, day /night. blurred. Each morning a cold “bath” in the Sea to reset: The relationship to the Ocean was a constant. I returned in June to build a site specific installation commissioned by ArtJuli Arts festival. The installation is set in-the-round, an inclusive space, it celebrates community and connection. The collage is made of advertisement/ billboard material re-contextualised to represent fulfilment rather than unmet desires. The half submerged figures connect with the Ocean which is audible directly beneath. Here is a short film describing sense of place that I made for Architecture Foundation UWE during my residency. I’m in conversation with Georg Blichfeldt, custodian of Kråkeslottet and curator of the ArtiJuli arts festival.
